"Do you know when you'll be chatting with Haim?" a text arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There's just a key snag: The author likewise longs to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're far from alone. Several high-profile admirers have publicly coveted the position.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career playing gigs at local delicatessens with their family. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy Award nominees.

Similar to the greatest bands, they're a close gang. Their visuals frequently depict them marching in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such unfettered exuberance you can't help but think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a bass'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the biggest honor. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage young girls to start a band."

"And thus everyone gets an invitation to be the fourth member of Haim."

Grammy Nod

The group are speaking from a break, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the nomination is deeply felt by the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant milestone," continues Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the pioneers that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The record emerged from a phase of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that odd in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The words follow endings and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them working out in the moment who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That recent resilience demanded a fresh approach – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Humor

The trio's candor shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal misadventures.

Someone left Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Future

You can clearly sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an global following.

However the sister act will always be their number one priority.

"We have been making music since I was four," says Alana. "There is no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
